Veterans Charities...

DON’T DONATE TO VETERANS CHARITIES.  By that I mean the ones that contact you through the mail or by phone or on TV.  Don’t get me wrong.  I would encourage you to give to our vets – but do it locally to the Rockland County Veterans Groups.

I think we should all learn a lesson from the Wounded Warrior Project and how quickly that fell apart.  If you remember, every day you would be bombarded with wounded warriors missing limbs or struggling to get around.  Then it would cut to them holding their child and then cut to their mother or spouse crying in the back ground, with melodramatic music.

I’m an amputee from Vietnam and I found those ads embarrassing.  All they were doing was raising money that went to people other than the veterans.

Answer me this?  Who pays for the writers, directors, casting, filming, audio, and who buys the air time, which isn’t cheap?  All those people are paid and well paid.  Who pays them?  You did.  Further, since the Wounded Warrior Project had its success, other national veterans’ organizations like the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion are doing somewhat of the same thing, which is going to have the same end but just paying way too much overhead.  I do encourage you to give, but keep it local because Rockland County groups are all volunteers – so if you give a dollar to them, every penny goes to the cause and stays here in Rockland.

If you have access to a computer, you can go to http://www.rockvets.com/ where we have a list of all the veterans’ groups and their points of contact.  Also, you can sign up for our Newsletter which keeps fairly current on the goings on in the veteran community.  For these folks who make it work, there is no overhead and they’ll give you a receipt for your taxes.  If your computer skills are like mine, you can call our office and we’d be happy to mail you a list of the veterans’ organizations.

Remember, if you do decide to give to these groups that come through the mail, TV, or phone, as much as 85% of your donation can go to overhead.  If you want to check out how much of your dollar goes to overhead, you can go to:  http://www.charitynavigator.org/

Just be careful where you send your money!

Combat Vet ID Cards Available

Combat Veteran ID Cards are now available.  If you are a combat veteran, you can get this card at the County Clerk's Office which is located at 1 South Main Street, Suite 100, New City, New York 10956.  To apply for the Combat Veteran ID Card, or the F.A.V.O.R. card for all veterans, if you don't already have one, bring your DD214 to the County Clerk's Office.

They'll take your photo and make up a card for you. You can contact the County Clerk's Office at (845) 638-5076 or call the Veterans Service Agency of Rockland County at 845-638-5244.

This new Combat Veteran ID Card offers all of the same benefits as the F.A.V.O.R. (Find and Assist Veterans of Record) card, which includes almost 1000 discounts to Rockland's veterans, but this new CVID card has specific advantages. The CVID card is co-sponsored by the Rockland County Police Benevolent Association and will be recognized by our local law enforcement agencies. So if you ever get pulled over, along with your license, registration, and insurance card, show the police officer your Combat Vet ID card so he knows you're an in-country vet.

Pictured above (from left to right) are Paul Piperato, County Clerk, Bob Scheiner, Howard Goldin, and Craig Wertheim showing their Combat Veteran ID Cards.

Veterans Showing Support for Law Enforcement

Reflective stickers with the Thin Blue Line American Flag are available to veterans for free in the Rockland County Veterans' Office.  If veterans would like to show their support of our law enforcement community by displaying one of these stickers, just bring your DD214 to the Veterans Service Agency, 20 Squadron Blvd., New City, New York 10956.  For further information call the veteran's office at 845-638-5244.

Displaying the USA Flag with the thin blue line shows support of our brothers and sisters in law enforcement.  The Thin Blue Line represents the relationship of the police in the community as the protectors of the citizenry from the criminal element.

It signifies those men and women who are willing to give their life for the peace and harmony of the community they serve.

No-Cost Flu Shots For Veterans

VA Retail Immunization Care Coordination Program
VA and Walgreens are national partners, providing no-cost flu shots to enrolled Veterans of the VA health care system. Enrolled Veteran patients nationwide have the option of getting their flu shot at any of Walgreens’ 8,000 locations in addition to their local VA health care facilities. Walgreens has the capability to electronically send vaccination information to the VA electronic health record (EHR).  The VA-Walgreens national partnership is part of VA’s eHealth Exchange project. Last year’s national pilot program ensured that many Veterans got their no-cost flu shot at their local Walgreens, satisfying their wellness reminder because they either found it more convenient or did not have a scheduled appointment at a local VA health care facility.

Can anyone guess who this guy is?

It is being designed by cadets from the United States Military Academy at West Point and, with the support of the County of Rockland, will be located in Haverstraw Bay County Park nearby to the Rockland County 9/11 Memorial.  It is currently scheduled to be completed by Memorial Day 2017.

The content, design, and visuals of the memorial and monument is guided by, and will be approved by, a committee made up of local veterans of these conflicts.
